Cylinder Preservation Project

From the Department of Special Collections at University of California, Santa Barbara comes this huge collection of digitized cylinder recordings. Seems like this would be a great resource for a student or researcher trying to put together multimedia piece on early 20th century life.

If nothing else, it’s a nice place to escape from the daily grind for just a few moments.

I was particularly taken with this 1921 recording of the Imperial Marimba Band doing the 12th Street Rag.

International Voice Exchange (IVE): Good teacher training courses for spoon-fed teache…

Good teacher training courses for spoon-fed teachers

Before we can expect teachers and students globally to make full use of blogs, podcasts, Skypecasts and webcasts, we need to build good teacher training courses. In my opinion, the courses should be (1) multifaceted, including both text, pictures, video, sound, and hands-on components, thus (2) mostly asynchronous, with also (3) some synchronous components. There could also be (4) a ‘Quick Start’ for those who do not need all the details that the spoon-fed teachers require. Even they may find the instructions useful for certain points later. Finally, the instructions need to be (5) ongoing, so that users can continue to ask and answer each other’s questions. Motivated learners will want to dig…

The Real Paul Jones: Grant deadline

Working all day and a good part of tomorrow on a grant to add more films to folkstreams.net which is already a rich resource modestly called “The Best of American Folklore Films.”

Many surprises among the films up already including:

Painted Bride
This 1990 video features the exquisite mehndi body painting tradition as it is practiced among Pakistani immigrants living in Queens, New York City. The film follows a mehndi artist, Shenaz Hooda, as she prepares a henna paste and paints intricate designs on the hands and feet of a bride-to-be, while the bride’s friends sing humorous songs mocking the groom and the future in-laws.

Remembering Emmanuel Church
An oral history of Emmanual Episcopal Church in…

ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES: How To Write in Blogosphere

I once wrote a funny post about picking a style for a blog. But this one is meant to be more serious, what with the New Year and all, and a smidgen of sternness is called for. So imagine me typing away in my best bib-and-tucker, with a frozen look on my divine face.

The above paragraph is an example of the voice I picked for this blog. It’s not the easiest of voices, and if I had known that I would have picked something else, something that requires less energy to manage, something that would allow me to use a little longer sentences and to be less snarky. Though I could…

Basecamp: Free plan for teachers

Yesterday, I saw a post from Tod Maffin extolling the virtues of Basecamp. And then today, on English360, I noticed a post from last month mentioning that a Basic Level account is being offered free to educators.

Maybe it is time to check Basecamp out.
